FEDERAL CODES
In the areas of Federal Jurisdiction material handling equipment and operations are segregated and regulated by the “industry” being served by the equipment. In general these areas are “Construction”, “General Industry” and “Maritime” but there are additional “Special Industries” and other Code requirements that may be relevant given the existence of specific criteria. Federal Codes are the “minimum” criteria that a piece of equipment or user can meet and be considered “satisfactory” by the regulatory body.
STATE CODES
State plan requirements must be “at least as effective” as the similar applicable Federal codes. This means that individual requirements found in a state can be more or less stringent than the Federal codes as long as the Stat’s plan is deemed at least as effective. Approximately one-half of the states have opted for their own “State Plan”.
